Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week

April 20th 2012 marked the beginning of Pittsburgh craft beer week. Through (I think) the 28th, there will be many beer events every day. These include limited run beers on taps, tastings, special happy hour deals, and everything else in between. The locations participating are all across the city and into the surrounding suburbs in every direction. As of this writing, we're three days in and I've sampled a few different events.

Bocktown Beer and Grill, Robinson Twp.

Went to this place the other night for dinner and a brewski. Our waitress looked like a 1980's Jennifer Jason Leigh and was very nice and attentive. The food was typical bar food, but taken up a notch in terms of quality. Thankfully, not price. Real tasty stuff. There were vegetarian options too. The beer selection was quite good, I want to say four to six bottle fridges with a good variety of high quality stuff, and maybe 12 taps or so, all with decent local and micro stuff and as evidenced by the chalk board and tap print-off, a pretty good rate of rotation as well.

Tulune's in Johnstown

I dropped by this place after visiting family in Johnstown, PA. Tulune's is right off 403 just south of 756. It looks a bit like a dive on the outside, and when you go in at first it seems like you were right. But the place has a subtle charm that creeps under your skin and when you check the beer menu, you will realize you've hit the jackpot. Tulune's has an incredible selection of brews including many I haven't seen anywhere before (beer from Trinidad?!).

Beaver Brewing Company Tasting

Beaver Brewing, a self-described nano brewery in Beaver county that is essentially a homebrewer’s attempts at starting his own brewery, had their first ever tasting in Pittsburgh at the OTB Bicycle Cafe on Carson Street yesterday. Naturally, I went and had the chance to try two of the three year-round offerings.
